Burr Bridal have entered the world of blogging. After almost 2 years in our Cambridge store we started to think that we could offer our brides more in the form of advice, help, information, inspiration, anything to further assist our beautiful brides and their wedding party.

On a daily basis we see many brides and we usually have a chat! Some of our brides' are completely new to the bridal process, have had a brief look online, pinterest, the usual places but are yet to learn the jargon that many Bridal Boutiques use! So I though I would just compile a quick list of jargon busting language that can tend to crop up every now and then during bridal appointments.

I'll start with the ones that the majority of Brides' probably have a good grasp of when they visit any bridal boutique and thats jargon to do with shape and style of The Dress. Words that you might find cropping up could be;

Sottero & Midgley

Trumpet: A soft flare on a slightly figure hugging dress that starts below the hips but above the knee. Good at creating curves and hiding problems areas, more suited for tall and slender brides'.

Madison James

Mermaid: A very well known term among wedding dress shapes, very fitted gown down past the hips and flaring from the knee. If you love your curves then this is the shape for you!

Sottero & Midgley

Column: This one is coming back strong with all you bohemian and vinatge brides! A very simple but classic 'straight down' shape. These dresses generally come with no train or a small 'puddle' train.

Mia Mia

A-line: A good way to describe this shape is drawing the letter A! The top part of the A being the

bases of your head/neck and with the gown flowing down and out there. So a more fuller skirted wedding gown but not the biggest. You can get small and big A-lines but these generally arent the biggest dresses available.

Sottero & Midgley

Ballgown: I don't think this one needs much explaining, the biggest of the wedding gowns size wise. Much more skirt than an A-line and more netting underneath which is what gives it fuller skirt. We at Burr Bridal have definitely seen a declined interets in these bigger dresses due the stigma that Channel 4's Big Fat Gypsy Wedding gave to them but also due to practicality!

We have had a lot of brides' in who when we first sit down and have a chat with them have said they would like a dress with some particular features, but a main feature would be that it is practical. I guess if you are a bride who is getting married in the height of summer in a beautiful converted barn with some farm type surroundings would a big ballgown be your first port of call? The main point is we understand is that every bride is unique, every bride wants to be a little bit different, a little bit traditional, a little bit modern, and we do all we can to make sure your dress reflects every little part of your personality as well.
